Appointments

How an appointment actually works.

What happens at each stage, what it costs, and how insurance is handled — set out before you call rather than explained afterwards.

How it works

Three steps, and no mystery about any of them.

Get in touch

Call my secretary, or send the short form, and she will come back to you with appointment times.

Your consultation

In person, by video or by telephone. We go through your symptoms and history, I examine you if that is needed, and we talk through what the options are.

A clear plan

If tests or treatment are needed, we agree the plan together first. Procedure and hospital costs are separate from the consultation fee.

Fees & insurance

Fees, set out plainly.

I am a Bupa Platinum consultant and fee assured. If you are paying for yourself, my consultation fees are here rather than quoted on request.

Common questions

The things people ask before they call.

Do I need a GP referral to see you privately?

Not always. Many patients arrange a private consultation directly. However, most insurers require a GP referral letter before they will authorise treatment, so if you are claiming on insurance it is usually worth getting one first.

If you are unsure, call and my secretary will tell you what your particular insurer needs.

Will my insurance cover it?

I am a Bupa Platinum consultant and fee assured. For any insurer, check your cover before your appointment.

Always contact your insurer for pre-authorisation before your appointment — they will give you a claim number, which my secretary will need.

What actually happens at the first appointment?

We talk through your symptoms, how long they have been there, and your medical history. Depending on the problem an examination may be needed — done privately, with a chaperone available if you would prefer one.

You will leave with an explanation of the likely cause, what tests are sensible, and what the treatment options would be. Nothing is booked on the day unless you want it to be.

Can we do the consultation by video or telephone?

Yes. I offer face-to-face, video and telephone consultations. Remote appointments work well for discussing results, reviewing progress after surgery, or a first conversation about a problem that does not need examining straight away.

Do you also work in the NHS?

Yes. I am a consultant colorectal surgeon at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. My private practice runs alongside that NHS work.
